Hugelkulture bed moved to the location of the old greenhouse

The finished size of the new greenhouse is going to be BIG – 10.3′ x 14.3′ – so instead of putting it where the old one was, I’m going to build it against the back wall of my fence, in the middle of the yard. It will get great sun there, but this means I have to move 2 garden beds to make room to build it.

Moving the first garden was a lot of work because it was a hugelkulture bed. I used the soil on top to top off a couple of nearby garden beds. Then I moved the frame to the new spot, moved the rotting logs from the bottom of the bed (they were really breaking down nicely! I’m so happy about that! Some of them were crumbling when my shovel would hit them. Then I filled the bed up again with the rest of the soil from in between the logs and finished it off with more soil from the 2nd bed I needed to move.

The second bed is a keyhole garden and it’s built from cinderblocks, retaining wall bricks and some pavers. While disassembling this bed, I found ANOTHER wasp nest built in the hole of a cinderblock. Good thing I spotted them going in and out of that space… It was large and there are a lot of wasps in there. I moved the block that was on top off with a rake so I could run away and then sprayed them with a vinegar/water spray and then with my trusty and powerful hose sprayer. They are still pretty angry so I keep going back out to disturb them so they don’t get too comfortable again. I need to get them out of there.

I think the wasps and I are totally over the conflict at this point. Get out of my way, guys!
