Building a Custom DIY Greenhouse with Old Recycled Windows

Here’s how we enhanced our ability to grow great plants and extend your growing season with a greenhouse built from recycled materials available locally. On this website I share the products and accessories and plant varieties best suited to greenhouse growing in the northeastern region of the United States.

Why We Built Our Old Window Greenhouse

In the town of Bayville, the county of Ocean, the State of New Jersey, there sits a residential property that was a wooded lot in the pine barrens not too long ago. In winter 2015, the new owners took up residence in the shiny new house and set to work creating the landscape of their dreams. Well, my dreams.

The gardens, food forest, raised beds and rain garden have origin stories of their own – but in late winter, 2018, we put up the first greenhouse. It has served us well, but by mid summer 2020, we hatched a plan to replace it with a new one.

Leveling Up The Greenhouse!

The new greenhouse will be constructed of used, recycled windows, clear plastic roofing material and new lumber. The plans are drawn out, estimates complete and now it’s time to order supplies and start construction!

This site will document the project from start to finish. We will also discuss how we manage temperatures, humidity, pest control, ventilation, what grows well inside a greenhouse in New Jersey throughout the seasons and what to avoid planting in that space. We will talk about when to start seeds, how to start your spring garden using a greenhouse, saving seed and hardening off plants. Garden tools and accessories will be reviewed and favorite varieties of plants and produce, especially New Jersey native plants, will be discussed.

We look forward to your feedback and to take this journey with all of you! Thanks for joining us!
